ABOUT ME

Ethan Greenfield

Hi, welcome to GardenExpertUSA.com.

I’m Ethan Greenfield. If you’re here right now, we share the same thing: wanting to grow plants even though we live in tiny city apartments where everything seems impossible.

I’ve lived in big American cities for the last decade. Brooklyn, Chicago, Austin, you name it. My Brooklyn place? Barely any sunlight. Chicago balcony? Wind knocked everything over constantly. Austin patio? So hot I thought my plants would literally cook. And honestly? I killed so many plants. Overwatered them, forgot to water them, put them in the wrong spots. I messed up a lot. But each time a plant died, I learned something. That’s why this site exists, so you don’t have to make all the same mistakes I did.

Here’s the truth: I don’t have a degree in horticulture or anything like that. I started this because I got really frustrated. Every article I read gave me advice like “make sure your plant gets bright indirect light,” but nobody told me what to do when my apartment had ONE window that faced a brick wall. Or how to keep anything alive on a balcony that turned into a furnace every afternoon in Texas. I couldn’t find real answers for my actual problems. So I started figuring it out myself, and I wanted to share what I learned.

This website is just me helping you grow plants in a city, no confusing terms. No pretending you have perfect conditions and just dealing with reality, small apartments, weird weather, pets that eat everything, not much money to spend, and barely any time.

What’s On This Site

Everything here is stuff I’ve actually tried. I’m not guessing or repeating what I read somewhere. I tested this in real apartments.

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Apartment Gardening: How to deal with dark rooms, dry air from your AC or heater, and zero space. Different advice for different cities, too, because Seattle and Miami are nothing alike.
  • Balcony & Patio Gardening: What actually survives where you live. Florida’s humid. Colorado’s dry. The plants you need are entirely different.
  • Pet-Safe Plants: I have pets. I don’t want them getting sick. So I researched which plants are safe and which ones are dangerous.
  • Growing Food in Small Spaces: You can grow tomatoes, herbs, strawberries, and all without a yard: pots, vertical planters, or even just a windowsill work.
  • DIY Stuff on a Budget: Make a self-watering planter from a bottle. Find grow lights that don’t cost a fortune but actually help. Innovative solutions that don’t drain your wallet.
  • Seasonal Help & Fixing Problems: Winter coming? Going on vacation? Leaves turning yellow? I’ve got answers for whatever’s going wrong right now.

What You Get From Me

Here’s my deal with you:

  1. Real Talk: I won’t hype things up or lie to you. Plants take time. Some die. That’s normal. I’ll tell you what actually works.
  2. No Fancy Words: I explain things like I’m talking to a friend. Simple. Clear. No gardening jargon that makes you feel stupid.
  3. Your Pets Matter: I’ll always tell you if a plant could hurt your dog or cat. Safety first, always.
  4. I’m Still Learning: I update things all the time. New stuff I discover, feedback from people like you, things I try that work better. It’s ongoing.

Why This Exists

I made this for the person in Minnesota trying to keep anything green alive when it’s freezing outside. For families in Phoenix, where the balcony hits 110 degrees. For someone in Atlanta who works all the time and wants one plant that won’t die immediately. For anyone who’s ever thought, “I don’t know if I’m doing this right.”

Growing plants in your home isn’t just about the plants. It’s about making your space feel alive. Feel like yours. I want to help you do that without all the stress and confusion.

Thanks for stopping by.
